The criteria:

  • Small; no higher than 30cm
  • flowers in any colour other than pink or yellow.
  • long flowering season
  • perennial
  • suitable for a clay border in full sun (it gets HOT in summer)

Currently I have violas but they don’t look right as most are yellow and the flowers behind them which were supposed to be a mix of colours are all yellow too....
Too much yellow!

Veronica - blue so a fab contrast to yellow and a spike of flowers so a different shape from the violas.

Some types of geranium eg rozanne.

Slightly taller than you might want but a young Erysimum Bowes Mauve flowers forever it seems (but the plant is short lived so take cuttings or be prepared to replace) and is evergreen. I’ve had one in flower since at least January.

I did improve my soil with some extra compost and grit and it’s in full sun till 7pm at the moment.

A white potentilla or rosemary would be ok in hot sun. My rosemary started flowering last November and it's still going.

Salvia in white or blue, cat mint, star of summer, lobelia, white carnations or white/ day lily.
