Gravel and weeds

Karcheer · 14/06/2021 22:30

We have a long gravel driveway (not bragging). I seem to spend a lot of time pulling up weeds (quite a lot of grass) but the weeds are winning! I could literally weed everyday and still wouldn't get them all.

Anyone got any tips for how to get on top of this.
Thank you.

I know it’s not good, but glysophate is great

Interested in this. Currently am using a trowel and my hand to remove lots of weeds and grass from my gravel drive..

I find I only really need to do it once a year. In early spring spend a day really getting every weed out then keep on top of it by pulling out what I see on my way up and down the drive.

A weed burner might be good for your back?

I second the burner thing but also watching thread with interest as I don't ever manage to kill all the bastards.

I used to have a 1/4 mile long gravel driveway to look after. By far the most effective weed control was a weed burner. Fun to use too.

To get it under control to begin with we did a mega weed burning session and then topped up the gravel so it was nice and thick (quite bare in patches). Then it was easy maintenance with the weed burner once a season.

Ooo looks like I need to get myself a weed burner!

Have fun OP! It's an oddly satisfying job.

Make sure it's a gas burner though, there are lots of electric ones out there but they just don't get hot enough.

before you use a weed burner make sure that you don't set fire to things (buildings/plants/fences) next to the area.

We’ve used the weed burner inside (baked Alaska/creme brûlée) but be very very careful!

Wow! How on earth???

I’m afraid I don’t have a modern shiny kitchen and porcelain crockery. Battered metal baking trays and so on. I have a large room, with for example a pile of Wellington boots at one end,and a solid floor with the sort of indescribable tiles seen in down market pubs in the 80s, I’ve never been able to justify the cost and disruption of replacing, but we can do “science” at home with less concerns…
