Anyone got one? Thinking about one for a small back garden to add some winter interest against a white painted wall and dark green hedge.

This is mine, in November. Once the leaves have dropped it is a vivid scarlet branches. I prune mine as the best colour.is from the newest stems.

I hadn’t thought of pruning it. Does the main stem stay red or not? I like the look of acer griseum too but that looked like it would get too big.

My main stem lost its colour after 3 years, I don’t cut into that, but I cut a quarter of the new stems out each year In Spring . This is my acer griseum. I take the top out each year to keep it this height. It grows faster and spreads wider than Sango Kanu

That triggered me to google snake bark maples, as I have two snake barks, different species (I did have a third, a different species again). It seems that all the Acers of section Macrantha (about 20 species) have snake bark.
