Know nothing about flowers or gardening and have these in my garden. I don’t remember planting them so they may have been planted by the previous owners of the house. But I think they’ve only been around for a couple of years and we’ve lived in the house for 8 years. Any idea what these are or how they could have got here?

First is peony, second two are irises.

Peony, iris reticula, flag iris

The red one is a peony.

Cut the blooms for the house just as they start opening and you'll get loads over the season.

They will die back to bulbs over winter and then Phoenix out again in spring.

Ours seem to thrive on benign neglect.

How lovely to discover those beautiful flowers in your garden.

mammmamia · 01/06/2021 14:49

Thank you so much. I adore peonies and I thought that’s what those were - delighted to have it confirmed and also that I can cut blooms for the house!

How could they have got there? We didn’t plant them and I’m pretty sure they have only appeared in the last couple of years. We do nothing in the garden apart from get someone round to mow the lawn Blush

Flowers thank you for responding

The Iris isn’t reticulata - that’s a very dwarf bulbous species which flowers around February time. It might be Iris sibirica though, which is rhizomatous.

Really impressed with people who can identify these

Peonies won’t flower again in the same year if you cut them so it’s a choice between the flowers in your garden or the flowers in a vase.

EBearhug · 01/06/2021 16:59

I think iris sibirica, too, and the last ones are it's germanica.

Indoctrination from childhood in my case. I blame my mother.

EBearhug · 01/06/2021 17:00

it's germanica-> iris germanica

Stupid autocorrect...

Pinkywoo · 01/06/2021 17:29

Peonies can not flower for years after being planted/moved so maybe you just didn't notice it when it was just leaves.
