stinky waterbutt

I installed a waterbutt last year which collects water from a garden office. But the water stinks. If I open the butt lid, I see horrible slimy stuff that looks like half-decomposed dead slug. But I don't know what it is.

I carefully emptied the waterbutt, cleaned it out etc, and it has refilled over the last week of rain. And the stink is back too.

What is causing this? and what can I do to stop it?

I pressure wash mine which keeps them clean for a month or so. Have you looked at your roof and gutters. Whatever is in the butt is coming off there so if you haven’t cleared your gutters in a while they will be full of stinky gunk!

I use the foot of a pair of tights as a filter to stop funky stuff getting in. My top tip is a spoonful of olive oil on top to stop insects breeding in there.

Thanks Woeisme. I'll try that.
