I noticed this coming up in the garden, and have absolutely no clue whether this is a weed or something spectacular!

I don't think it's a weed. It's a perennial maybe astilibe

FrDamo · 14/05/2021 23:15

I'm going to say NOT astilbe. It looks too "fleshy" for that. However I don't have a useful counter suggestion. I'd like to see a bit more development before I committed a best guess.

Cakeonthefloor · 15/05/2021 00:03

Peony?

pickingdaisies · 15/05/2021 00:07

I thought maybe a peony too, but if like to see it in a week's time. Definitely worth waiting to find out! Could also maybe be a sucker from something like a sumach? (Wild guess)

IsItTimeForGinYet · 15/05/2021 00:10

I'm guessing a peony too.... hope it is!

Beebumble2 · 15/05/2021 07:24

Looks like Peony to me as well.

iamreally · 15/05/2021 07:54

Thanks all! I initially though peony, but I can't remember planting one in the front garden, and the peonies in the back garden are already in bud. I will keep an eye and see how it progresses!

It looks a little like my bleeding heart does when it’s just sprouted.

pickingdaisies · 16/05/2021 10:29

Ooh, I wonder, Swanshaped!

IsItTimeForGinYet · 18/05/2021 22:40

It's not Japanese knotweed is it?

iamreally · 18/05/2021 22:53

@IsItTimeForGinYet I really bloody hope not - our only saving grace is that there isn't any evidence of it in or around locally. Will be posting another picture once it's a bit bigger!

very late if it is. Mine is in full flower, almost over
IsItTimeForGinYet · 19/05/2021 09:45

I hope it isn't too! I put your photo into the plant finder app and that's what it came up with... fingers crossed!

SwanShaped · 19/05/2021 12:42

Yeah I thought that after I said it. My bleeding heart is also in full bloom

iamreally · 19/05/2021 21:09

A little update - doesn't seem to be Japanese Knotweed 😅 I have also found another 3 planted pretty strategically so I think it's definitely something I have planted, but buggered if I can remember what it is!

Thus demonstrating that plant apps aren't all they're claimed to be.
pickingdaisies · 20/05/2021 16:53

We are going to need regular updates now OP (totally over invested here)

iamreally · 05/06/2021 22:52

So another update!
3 out of the 4 plants have been munched by the slugs ( so if it is Japanese Knotweed, I am sitting on the solution to the problem🤑🤑🤑)
However, here is a picture or the remaining plant ( which was hiding under a tulip leaf!

iamreally · 05/06/2021 23:11

Yay - this is what it looks like now - any ideas?

WobblyLondoner · 06/06/2021 08:16

Looks like acanthus (bears breeches) to me. Slugs love them but they are utterly indestructible despite that.

WobblyLondoner · 06/06/2021 08:17

Although on a second look the earlier photos don't look like acanthus - the leaves seem more delicate and the colour is different.

iamreally · 25/06/2021 12:49

Hoping that someone can solve the mystery of what this plant is - here it is in bloom- was a lovely surprise!

I don't know why I click on these threads as I never know, however I do like that plant so now pmk to find out.

CrumbsThatsQuick · 25/06/2021 12:54

@Crockof I think we did find out 😀
Gorgeous OP, thanks for the update.

BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush · 25/06/2021 13:01

It looks a bit like a mallow of some kind - but I'm not sure about the leaves.
