Moving roses

We loved two climbing roses a few weeks ago, from a shady spot (where they shouldn’t have been planted really, as they’ve just grown taller over the few years that they were there, looking for the sun) into a sunnier west facing spot, against a fence.

Planted them straightaway, watered them in.

I know it wasn’t a great time to move them, but it’s done now! The leaves look very, very dry though. Do you think they’ll recover? I’ve watered them a few times since and we’ve had quite a lot of rain this week.

Transplant shock - they should recover! Just water as usual and fingers crossed they will come through it. I moved a rambling rose a few years ago and it made it - and more recently dug up a rose from the garden and put it in a pot to move it to new house. The potted rose is just getting back to how it was when I first dug it up - that was a month ago now.

Thanks! I have hope now. I will keep watering.

Roses are hard buggers. I moved one mid summer last year (no choice, it was a rescue mission from my sons garden) and it wilted and looked completely dead. Chopped it right back and by October it had lots of new leaves and is absolutely thriving now.

If it doesn't recover, cut it back and I'm almost positive it will resurrect itself.

Thank you. They are Maid of Kent and Madame Alfred Carriere, neither of which are known as being really delicate. I am hopeful! They will definitely perform loads better in their new positions, if they recover.
