Cornus Elegentissima

I was promised by a local nursery that this shrub would be fine in deep shade in a north facing corner ...I'm not so sure. Attached is a photo.. it doesn't appear to be growing that well. Could it be the position it is in or perhaps it's the very cold spring we're having?
Any advice very much appreciated. Thanks.

Ime cornus take a long time to establish and start to bulk out.

It's doing better than mine, which is in a sunnier spot.

Shrubs usually take a while establishing a good root system, with above ground growth taking off in the second year

That's interesting. Mine has its feet in damp clay as well as being in deep shade and I really thought it wouldn't survive the winter we've just had. The nursery said Cornus is as tough as old boots so we'll see ...
