When to move my rose bush?

I treated myself to four bare root rose bushes with my Christmas money and planted them in February. It's my first time growing roses and am excited to see little shoot appearing.

Here's the problem .... our landlord has just given us notice to move. Because of Covid we have six months but will go as soon as we've found something. Should I buy four plastic pots and dig them up quick while they are small or wait until will move in the summer and just dig them up and plant straight in the new garden?

I have never done it, but I have dug out an established rose and they have huge strong tap roots that go straight down. Based on this I would say dig up pronto so that they can establish in the pot rather than in the ground, and also get biggest pots you can if they've already been in a while and will have made a lot of root growth already. How crappy for you - good luck

Best time is autumn. Cut them back in September/October. Then pot them and take with you. Six months is November.

I agree with BeardedDragon - I moved mine to an enormous pot in May last year and it was successful. It was a huge rose too with a big root system, which made it challenging. I’d get yours out quickly before hey develop such big roots.

I’d suggest taking cuttings and trying to root them with hormone powder too, as a back-up option just in case your roses don’t survive.

I’d dig them up and put them into pots now. Use a compost with John Innes, or mix soil with compost.

best time is october to march but as you don't have that I would dig them out now. 30l pot

Thanks everyone! I've taken your advice and ordered three big pots. I'll get them dig up at the weekend Smile
