I’d love some recommendations for beautifully scented roses. Ideally tall ones - at least 1.5m tall if possible.

Arthur bell.
I have bush ones which aren’t tall but I have seen climbing roses under the same name but haven’t grown the climbing version so can’t say if it smells as good.

I can't grow roses on my thin, alkaline soil, but if I could, I'd go for Gertrude Jekyll, Generous Gardener and Mme Alfred Carriere.

My MIL is a fantastic grower of roses, she has all of these 3, and they all smell fantastic.

Constance Spry. Strong “myrrh” scent - just smells like proper old roses to me.

Emily Gray, a rambler, with apricot coloured flowers with a fresh apple scent.

Yves Piaget (a bright pink, frilly flower) and Ferdinand Pichard (bright pink and pale pink stripes/speckles, almost looks painted).

Munstead Wood, it has a really rich intense smell, I use it to make rose cordial, the dark red petals make it pink and it tastes just like rose Turkish delight.

Lady Hillingdon. Heavenly!

Zepherine Drouhin. Pink climber and gorgeous scent.

Ooh thank you! I will work my way through these - they all sound wonderful. I’ve heard lots of people recommend Gertrude Jekyll for scent but some of these others are completely new to me.

I’m not sure what a myrrh scent is like - I do love the scent of old roses though so that sounds good.

I don’t know but it looks beautiful! I used to have a Hugh Dickson which looked a bit like that (that has a goodish old rose scent too).

I have a Graham Thomas (yellow) which smells lovely but doesn't scent the air around it, but I don't like the name.

I know it's been mentioned already, but Gertrude Jekyll has a gorgeous, old fashioned rose scent that you can smell half way down the garden when it's in flower. Definitely one of my favourites!

I have a gorgeous deep red rose with a fantastic scent called Deep Secret - tall hybrid.
