My son came home with a plant bulb to grow at home. He can't recall what it's called though. Anyone able to identify it please?

Is it an Amaryllis?

Whitney168 · 07/05/2021 17:09

Agapanthus?

DiddlyWiddly · 07/05/2021 19:01

I think that might be a gladioli.
I have loads in my garden and they have quite a distinctive flat, stiff leaf, quite unlike any of my other plants

I am intrigued OP as I have four similar plants growing in my flower bed which could only have been planted by me, yet I have no idea what they are. I thought they could be irises or gladioli (although I have gladioli elsewhere which look nothing like these and are only an inch high right now while these are at least a foot tall). I’ve now looked up amaryllis and think it could fit the bill but not fully sure. I don’t think they’re agapanthus as the leaves are too stiff. Waiting eagerly to hear what other mumsnet gardeners have to say!

It's name is Cilla.

OhRene · 07/05/2021 20:01

@DiddlyWiddly this is completely flat too so it may be. I guess I'll find out eventually.

It shall henceforth be known as, Cilla.

Some kind of iris or amaryllis?

IvysPoison · 07/05/2021 20:05

I think it looks like a gladioli.

Mysterian · 07/05/2021 20:11

Gladioli. Mine are all coming up like that. Never as good as the first year though.

CombatBarbie · 07/05/2021 20:18

I'd say it's way too early for Gladiolis.... However my lilies are sprouting so who knows!!

OnTheBrink1 · 07/05/2021 20:36

It’s gladioli! I had one of these mystery’s pop up on a border last year - exactly the same leaves. They are beautiful once the flowers are out!

YanTanTethera123 · 07/05/2021 21:04

Freesia? I have an identical one growing in my greenhouse.

MereDintofPandiculation · 08/05/2021 12:35

Not an amaryllis - that has leaves which taper from the base, this one has a leaf which looks wider above the base.. And leaves look too wide for freesia.

@OhRene Did you ever discover what your child’s plant was ? Mine turned out to be crocosmia !
