Hi gardeners, i wonder if you can help in identifying this tree. Is it a cherry blossom, a peach tree or something else? I've taken a picture of it using the plant identification app but still not quite sure how accurate that is and have tried to search online too. Thanks.

probably cherry but post more photos including the bark & the shape of the whole tree.

poppinpink · 05/05/2021 12:01

Ok thanks I'll see if I can get into it a bit more.

Could be a purple-leaved ornamental Malus (apple). Flower looks more like apple than cherry, though being in the same family the flowers are very similar.

Kdubs1981 · 05/05/2021 14:23

Purple plum?

MayGreen · 05/05/2021 14:32

Looks like crabapple to me, we've got a row of the purple leaves, magenta flowered ones like that in my local park. Since apple, plum, cherry etc are all in the rose family they have very similar blossom so you might only know for sure once the fruit form.

yamadori · 05/05/2021 16:26

I think it looks more like a crab apple too, mainly from the leaf, but there's literally thousands of varieties of apple so it's impossible to tell which one.

A picture of the bark on the main tree trunk would make it easier.

ofwarren · 05/05/2021 16:28

It's a crab apple according to my plant identifer app.

Hall crab apple
Malus Halliana

I'd rather trust the expert eyes of @MereDintofPandiculation and @yamadori than a plant app to be honest.

Ok... Confused
I was answering the OP not you, but nevermind

We have a crabspple that looks similar, I think the variety is Royalty.

Londonmummy66 · 05/05/2021 17:51

We have a tree with flowers exactly like that which is an ornamental cherry rather than an apple - in the autumn it is mobbed by parakeets who chomp the cherries and dump the stones on the path underneath.

Hedgesgalore · 05/05/2021 18:01

Here's my crabapple.

Don't know the variety as it was here when we moved in.

Oh thanks everyone I think it might be crab apple right enough! I remember seeing apples all over the place last year now that you mention it! Lovely!

You can grow them from the crab apple pips, but they probably won't come true from seed because they hybridise with whatever other apple trees are around.

Oh that's interesting dodobookends, thanks!
