Nepeta...

Hi, we've got great Nepeta plants which I'd love to porpagate from & plant below my David Austin roses in half barrels. But; we've got kittens! I've never owned a cat before. Will they be attracted to it, and if so what will they do? Destroy it? Poo in the containers?

They will roll in the catnip until it is flat and eat it.
Try chives instead.

As will every other cat in the next three streets.

I have nepeta and a local cat who treats my garden as his own - he doesn't seem interested in the catmint at all, and none of the other locals come either (they don't anyway, I think I'm in his territory). You can propogate it by dividing it in the autumn. It's tough as old boots ime.

I grew some from seed in March. I was close to putting them outside as they're a about the same size as little garden centre herbs but my cat found them and ate most of the leaves. Still worth it as she makes me laugh when she's high on catnip. The plants are making a strong recovery just a few days later but she keeps trying to find them when I open the conservatory.

My cat likes dried catnip but shows no interest in nepeta plants - don’t think it’s strong enough to get her high Grin

Mine like it occasionally. I protected the early shoots by placing some chicken wire over the top of the pot. The shoots still grow through the mesh but the plants can't be flattened or eaten to stumps.

I have five nepeta planted outside, there are lots of local cats including one who likes sleeping under our kitchen window where the nepeta is -- I haven't seen any damage.

My cat isn't interested in catnip or catmint. Apparently there is a catnip gene and some cats don't have it.

Local cats just ate ours!

HasaDigaEebowai · 27/04/2021 06:21

I have two cats and they've shown no interest whatsoever.

I have different types growing in my garden. And i have two cats plus the neighbours who visits regularly. Two plants get ignored but one gets constantly grazed upon and rolled on by neighbours cat who goes mad for it. Have now had to put sn upside down wire hanging basket over it to give it a chance to grow. N cat is raging!! Wish i new what kind of catmint this was as i would actually grow more of it as they like it so much and its fun to watch them enjoying it.

Try perevskia or agastache

despondentatwork · 27/04/2021 11:51

Thx all! Interesting about the genetic trait...I have catnip toys & they ignore those completely....
