Dh versus The Ancient Lawnmower

Every year dh tries to mend The Ancient Lawnmower. The lawnmower is from 1964 and belonged to his grandfather.

Dh has practically rebuilt the damn thing and keeps ordering parts for it from increasingly obscure parts of the internet. I've asked him to cut the front lawn with the perfectly fine electric lawnmower which he won't allow me to use for some reason. He's now dismantled the Ancient Lawnmower in the back garden so he can use this instead.

It won't work. It never does. It last worked about five years ago. Just give up ffs.

I'm going to have to use the push trimmer.

The Ancient Lawnmower stinks, it's unbelievably noisy and is impossibly heavy. It leaves stripes in the lawn and has a new spark plug though 🙄

My dad always insisted on using a manual lawnmower because he thought they were better than the electric ones. I used to be able to hear him mowing from the other end of the street on my way home. Mortifying Blush

Ignore him. Get the electric one out, cut grass I recommend using ear plugs so you can't hear him moan.

Just cut it yourself with the electric one-what do you mean he won’t allow you to use it???

You don't understand about gardeners and their obsessive interest in their lawn, do you? Grin

I’m a gardener and perfectly happy for me DH or my teens to mow the law!

Being told I’m not allowed to use a simple piece of electrical equipment would piss me off!

Beebumble2 · 25/04/2021 12:28

Keep repeating the mantra ‘St Monty believes in rewilding the lawn’!

bellropes · 25/04/2021 12:39

He's funny about certain equipment.

I've done the whole lawn with the push trimmer. Embarrassing, but effective. Most of the neighbours aren't out yet, so I got away with it.

He is not alone. Just don’t let him google Lawnmower Museum. They are everywhere, it must be catching.

bellropes · 25/04/2021 13:06

Oh, he knows about the Lawnmower Museum 😄

He admits that it's not needed for our tiny lawns, but he won't get rid of it. I made him buy the electric one, but he's convinced I'll maim myself with it.

If it’s a Webb Witch mower, I can almost understand his passion for it! They were the finest mowers made, and vintage ones can fetch good money, but I can’t tell from your photo if it is.

How old are you? Do you have any palsies or anything? Do you have a tendency to fiddle with machinery without switching it off at the plug?

I'm finding it really difficult to understand why he thinks you're in danger from a lawnmower. Do you use a vacuum cleaner? A foodprocessor or blender? A sewing machine?

This was what baffled me! Unless you have significant medical or special education needs, why would you need to be told not to use an electrical device! Are you under 18?!
bellropes · 25/04/2021 14:33

No, I'm 51. I am a bit clumsy and have a tendency to break stuff, but I can manage the vacuum etc. so an electric lawnmower should present little problem. I think he imagines fingers and toes all over the lawn 😄

Honestly, I'm fine with the push trimmer.
