I’m looking for a rose for MIL’s 70th please if anyone has any recommendations Smile

She’d really love something very scented, I know she’s bought several over the years and been really disappointed with the lack of scent. It would be nice to find something which would gently ramble but not go insane and not too bushy as her garden is quite small and she had to get rid of one last year which was taking over. Not too fussy on colour, she likes whites pinks and yellows but the scent is the really important bit. Any help gratefully received!

Gertrude Jeykell?

Have a look at the David Austen rose site, really easy to search using different criteria, including scent

Knittedfairies · 19/04/2021 19:33

I was going to suggest Gertrude Jekyll too; it can be grown as a climber.

Honeywort · 19/04/2021 19:34

Yy to David Austin - Gertrude Jekyll is lovely but I’d also suggest the generous gardener as a possibility.

While bare roots are great for getting established, if you’re buying i. Summer and container grown.p, you could take MIL with you to choose and let her sniff out her favourite. If you can get to the David Austin garden in Shropshire, that would be a lovely trip.

I was coming to say exactly the same as everyone else.

If you go on the David Austin site you can select by highly fragrant, then pick the colour she would like from the ones available.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 19/04/2021 19:40

New Dawn is my favourite climbing rose and Just Joey is small but has a lovely scent.

BadgertheBodger · 19/04/2021 19:42

Brilliant thanks all

David Austin has the most fabulous roses

WellTidy · 19/04/2021 19:43

I love Gertrude Jekyll too, but it is really thorny, if that’s a consideration.

Delphigirl · 19/04/2021 19:47

I really love the generous gardener - it is a really beautiful rich but not strident yellow, flowers prolifically, climbs gently if you want it to, super healthy and reliable. I have given a few as presents and the recipients are still thanking me a decade or so later!

AdaColeman · 19/04/2021 19:54

Cardinal de Richelieu is a beautiful rose, abundant flowers in a deep gorgeous colour, with a lovely fragrance. Not thorny, available at DA.
What a lovely idea for a 70th birthday present!

jeannie46 · 19/04/2021 19:58

Zepherine Drouin Pink climber, wonderful scent. No prickles.

Fruhlings Morgen spectacular single petalled yellowish with pink bloom early summer

billybagpuss · 19/04/2021 20:06

Another suggesting the David Austin website you can chose colour, fragrance, aspect, size.

You can also visit the centre, it’s near Telford and the scent when you get out of the car is incredible.

MilduraS · 21/04/2021 08:41

The strongest rose fragrance I've ever smelled is Yves Piaget. It's a very frilly pink flower. If you have the time it's worth tracking down.

Redsquirrel5 · 21/04/2021 08:49

New Dawn (pink)is lovely and flowers for a long time. Grandpa Dickinson (yellow) was given to me by a colleague and has a beautiful scent and doesn’t get too big. Iceberg(white) is lovely too.

Also recommend David Austin as you get lots of information and his roses grow well. They are more expensive but she probably knows that so it will be a lovely gift.

BeaLola · 22/04/2021 00:45

Another one sugggesting David Austin

I have Gertrude Jekyl but the Generous Gardener is my favourite - apart from the gorgeous plentiful blooms lovely foliage as well

Manzana · 22/04/2021 00:48

also recommend David Austin, A Shropshire Lad has a lovely scent and peachy pink petals

Miranda15110 · 22/04/2021 00:50

Jude the obscure is one of the nicest roses I have ever smelled.

Pottedpalm · 22/04/2021 08:14

Princess Alexandra of Kent! Simply gorgeous colour and fragrance; it’s sumptuous. Also from David Austin.

EdinaMonsoon · 23/04/2021 21:37

Gentle Hermione (also a David Austin rose) is stunning. Very reliable with a good repeat flowering. The entire garden is filled with its delicious scent when in bloom.

NineOClockOnASaturday · 24/04/2021 08:35

Another goodie from DA is Buff Beauty - climbs a bit but not rampantly and has a good scent.

And this thread has convinced me I need a Generous Gardener - I’ve been dithering over a yellow rose for a long time.

Candleabra · 24/04/2021 08:43

Warning: once you enter the world of David Austin roses, the question will no longer be which rose, but how many? Proceed at your peril!

minniemomo · 24/04/2021 08:54

Try a good garden centre, ideally one with a David Austin section. We got great advice

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 24/04/2021 18:57

I have a David Austin discount code for 15% - not sure it's still valid, but worth a try: Wisley. Their roses are fabulous. I've got a separate shrub rose, a rambler and have just planted a hedge of fairly low growing shrub roses.

despondentatwork · 26/04/2021 21:18

Isn't Generous Gardener Pink?? Mine is...unless mine was mis-labelled.

BeaLola · 26/04/2021 21:46

Generous Gardener is palest pink - a blush pink - the foliage is superb

Quite agree with poster who said once you enter the DA world its how many ...
I did a quick count earlier
Generous Gardener
LD Braithwaite x3
