Alternatives to manure

I know this is the wrong time of year, I'm just thinking ahead!

I have very clayey soil, and for the last couple of years I've been adding Country Natural bagged manure over the winter and letting it rot down. Stinks for about a week then the smell goes.

Except... We have a dog now. And the dog goes crackers for it, and I've had to fence off the borders to stop her digging and eating it.

So, does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative that I can use this winter?

(I am trying to train her to not eat it, but she is a greyhound of very little brain and there are other things higher in the training list!)

Leaf mould or spent mushroom compost

We get a ton (builders bag) of spent mushroom compost every now and then. No smell and I use it for pots as well (there's probably a reason I shouldn't but...)

I have two greyhounds and the stupid one is always eating manure at my allotment. I shout at him to stop but he still gets some sneaky mouthfuls in regularly as his poo is always black after a trip up there. Doesn't seem to be doing him any harm. Our other greyhound just looks at him in disgust. She is far too refined to eat manure!

I'm hoping he'll grow out of it.

He also eats leaf mould, bagged compost, or anything else that looks exciting.

My dog will eat anything and very sensitive stomach.I have read that rotted manure is not good for dogs, can anyone recommend a pet friendly alternative to put on my garden boarders please?
