I'm mainly interested in flowers rather than vegetables/shrubs etc.

'The Flower Expert' by DG Hessayon. There are loads of second-hand ones on eBay, and there's a whole series of them about every garden topic you can imagine.

I've bought The Cut Flower Garden from Floret Farm and In Bloom by Clare Nolan recently. Both are brilliant but I prefer In Bloom which seems more in depth and as the writer is British, I'm a bit more confident that I can find any of the flowers listed there. Both focus on growing flowers for cutting but I think they'd be useful even if you want to leave the flowers in the garden.

I found the two books by Alan Titchmarsh really helpful. I think they're called How to be a Gardener. Probably find them on eBay.

Start watching Gardener's World with Monty Don. BBC 2. That'll give you some pointers.

The DG Hessayon books are really good - thoroughly agree with that recommendation
