Quite inexperienced, moved to a house with an established garden last summer so it's my first spring here.

Agree it's a camelia. Very pretty and low maintenance.

Camelia - you are very lucky and must have ericaceous soil.

Love semi shade
If very cold I cover mine in fleece unless in sheltered spot
