Growing lawn from seed

Can anyone recommend good grass seed. I'm not planning a formal lawn, just somewhere for children to play and kick a ball around etc. But I would like it to grow well enough for me to sit on it. I might throw in some wild flower seeds.
Also, how long will it take to grow and how do I achieve a good result?

Bumping this as I’m in need of the same advice!

It depends on your soil.

You can buy blends from garden centres which have a mix of all different grass types and the ones most suitable win out.

Alternatively if you want a perfect lawn find a local lawn guy. They will know the exact type of grass which is perfect for your area and sow the whole lawn in one type.

know a bit about the sun exposure, and take note if the soil tends to be dry or the yard always damp. garden centers will know from that what seed would be best.

I used a mixture and it's worked rather well. Best time to sow it is autumn, unfortunately- you don't want it drying out so get it done ASAP before summer. Don't walk on it for a couple of months, keep it well watered. Consider putting some topsoil down first.

My DF insisted we put polythene on ours to prevent drying and stop birds pilfering the seed. Google said it wasn't necessary but it did seem to work.
