I’m new to gardening and trying to find plants for a new garden I’ve got to plant up.
On my walks I’ve noticed this bush with lilac coloured flowers, mostly because it smells heavenly.
Can anyone tell me what it is, and what conditions might suit it ?

Looks like hawthorn to me?

bloodywhitecat · 21/03/2021 12:17

Ceanothus?

Cavagirl · 21/03/2021 12:18

Ooh take it back, think the leaves are the wrong shape...do you have a closer/clearer picture of the flowers?

ThreeKneeRepeater · 21/03/2021 12:19

Definitely not hawthorn.
Does Ceanothus smell jasminey?

I’ll have to walk past again and take a closer picture I think.
Thanks.

It looks like Viburnum Bodnantense, which would be in flower now with a strong scent.

oldestmumaintheworld · 21/03/2021 12:21

It is Daphne odorata a beautiful winter flowering shrub.

alkanet · 21/03/2021 12:22

I think it's Weigela Florida variegata. Pretty sure I can see variegated leaves when I zoom in.

HarrietSchulenberg · 21/03/2021 12:27

Have you tried the PlantNet app? It's great for identifying plants from pics of leaves or flowers.

Magpiecomplex · 21/03/2021 12:29

Looks like Daphne to me too

ThreeKneeRepeater · 21/03/2021 12:30

Thanks everyone. They all look like possibles! I’ll do a bit more research.
(I’ve quite a big empty space and wish I knew what to do with it.)

I've got some in my garden. It's Daphne and smells gorgeous.

Oldestmumintheworld

Yep, I stand corrected, you're right.

ThreeKneeRepeater · 21/03/2021 12:39

It was the smell I noticed before I saw the plant. Gorgeous.
Thank you everyone.

@HarrietSchulenberg

All the plant apps are basically scanning pictures to find one that looks the same, just as you or I would. Where they are lacking is they have no idea when they've got it wrong - on MN recently a plant app id'd a shrub as a ground creeping plant - so don't take what they say as authority but merely as a suggestion of where to start researching.
ThreeKneeRepeater · 22/03/2021 17:32

I went back and took a close up of the plant in question.
Can anyone confirm that this is indeed Daphne Odorata, as suggested above please?

Yep, I would think so.
