Climbing or rambling rose for apple tree?

I’d like to grow a rose into my apple tree. Can anyone recommend a good rose?

I’d set my heart on a rambler called Garland but have been warned by a gardener that rambling roses can be untidy / get carried away and a climber would be better.

Any advice? It needs to be a rose than can cope with shade and not too big!

Part of me is inclined to ignore gardener and get the Garland one!

Thanks!

There's some information here. I'd be very tempted to add a clematis too...

Thanks @Knittedfairies

Mme Alfred carrier looks good!

Could you recommend a shade loving clematis? Thanks!

Lots that like shade here although most like to have their feet in the shade, heads in the sun. (That site seems to have sold out of stock, but you get the idea). I hope you find something - it will look wonderful! If you do plant a clematis, I'd go for one that doesn't need pruning, so from group 1. (Explanation here)

David Austin roses are excellent. I’m truly peeved to not be able to order from them anymore (Brexit). Can’t recommend them highly enough. Plenty of advice on the website about which roses work best where and for what.

@Knittedfairies thanks! Love the idea of a clematis now!

Does anyone have any advice on the size I should go for - rose and clematis?

It’s an old, fully mature, apple tree. I’d say the trunk is about 8 foot tall and then under branches are 2-3 meters above that (it was pruned last month).

The two roses I like - the Garland and mme Alfred carrier both look big and I’m nervous!

The clematis sizes see go vary a lot and I’m not sure. I am a gardening newbie if that wasn’t completely obvious!
