Identify weed growing in grass

Hi, we moved to a new house in October 2020 and have recently noticed some worrying looking weeds. The small tuffle ones have quite stiff stems and seem to be just in the lawn to the back of our house. Whereas the larger root ball was found near the fence in the front garden and seems to go deeper. I've tried Google and don't seem to be getting anywhere. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Pictures on link below. Thanks.

Can you post a picture rather than a link?

Proudboomer · 13/03/2021 22:40

The link is safe to click. It is just google photos.
But from just looking at a ball of roots it is hard to identify. Is there any plant growth you can take a picture of and post?

Here you go - not all the pics in the link but a screenshot of two

Almost certainly not what you want to hear, but that second photo in the screenshot above looks very much like the dormant stalks of Japanese knotweed that we had in our old garden.

The second photo looks like horsetail to me - but you wouldn't want that either. Have you got the photos from when the house was on the market or can you make anything out on Google maps/Street view/Earth?

I'll attach some pictures. I'm new to posting on forums. Thanks

I think you'll have to wait & see what grows. it is not possible to tell at the moment.

Vess19 · 16/03/2021 21:39

Thanks for your comments. I've checked through older photos and there was nothing there, no evidence of anything. Our house was built in 2010 and on Google Street view, it was basically taken shortly after it was vult. Hopefully, soon we'll have some foliage growing so I can post some photos when that happens. I plan to dig the root ball one out this weekend.

I did contact a knotweed specialist and sent him over photos. He said he didn't think it was knotweed but again said to wait for growth. For now it's a nervous waiting game. Thanks again :)

I don’t thin it is knotweed as the roots tend to have a pink tinge to them.
The other could be mailstail which is a nightmare but there are ways to get rid of it.
The best being Ammonium Sulphamate which although is now banned by the EU as a pesticide it is still available as a compost excelator and can be bought on Amazon.
Unlike roundup and the like it is not a systematic weed killer so it doesn’t need to penetrate the waxy surface of mares tail but it will kill anything it comes into contact with.

Catabogus · 16/03/2021 21:55

Ooh no, now that I’ve seen the latest pictures I don’t think it’s knotweed either. The stems don’t look right (too frayed looking, and too tangled, without the distinctive hollow core). That must be a big relief!
