I have these all through my flower beds and also in the lawn. Before I start digging them out, can you tell me what it is?? It would be lovely if you could tell me that it’s a beautiful flower and I need to leave it well alone Grin

Definitely a weed. I think it is Lords-and-ladies (Arum maculatum), but it’s definitely a weed!

A weed is just a plant growing somewhere you don’t want it. That said if you have young children lords and ladies is a toxic plant and you are probably best to remove it.

I've always had the odd one of these in my garden, but they seem destined for a bumper year this year - I have a few huge clumps in my garden that I will be gunning for this weekend.

Shame in some ways, nice glossy foliage, but I have dogs and they make me a bit nervous leaving them (so normally pull up), plus am thinking they may take over at this year's rate.

Thank you all. Yes I too seem to have a bumper crop this year! That's my weekend sorted then Confused

Same here, the garden is absolutely covered in it this year! I have a lot of weeding to do....

I've got a bumper crop this year too Watch out for the little bulb thingies and try to find as many as you can.

On the list with the ivy, the nettles, the cleavers, the bindweed (soon) and probably Himalayan Balsam although i did a bloody good job with that last year.

Whether something is a weed is entirely up to you and whether you want it there. I’d be more worried about the big grass like leaves which look like Carex pendula, an enthusiastic self seeder'

Kitsmummy · 11/03/2021 09:47

@meredintofpandiculation oh arse, would you say that’s what this is?? I got given loads last year and spread them throughout my garden!!!

Not definitely - after all, if as a plant you're going for long straight leaves, there's not a lot of variation available to you, so there are other plants it could be. If you have no reason to believe the donor has a secret grudge against you, then clearly they valued it, so it's more likely to be something else. You'll know this summer when it flowers.
