When will Tulips sown in December show on surface ?

Hi,

I have planted Tulip bulbs for the first time after moving to a new home last year. I sowed them in mid Dec after reading its not too late. Forward to Feb 2021 and I still don't see any shoots appearing from the ground. Absolutely no sign of anything. Am I still having any good chances of getting treated to Tulip blooms ? Am I being impatient and they will actually take some time to shoot up ?

Mine were planted on October and have just appeared

Depends where you are. Places in the south will see tulips earlier than the north of Scotland. I'm in the middle of the uk and it's usually around mid-end March here.

Mine are just appearing in my pots. I'm in Scotland

Although I don't know if mine were planted as late as December

Mine were planted in November and are only just popping up from the soil now. You might be waiting a few more weeks.
It does depend on a lot of things, though. Soil moisture content and frost damage etc.

I planted mine late November and they've just started to break through.

My dh who always supplies the garden with lots of tulips says you will get them in the Spring.

Mine are about 8 cm tall nut they were planted in October and we are in the South with a sheltered garden.

Thank you for your responses and it gives me some hope. I live in the midlands. I will wait for couple more months and see what happens. Should have sowed them earlier, but never got around to do it.

Also the soil is bit clay like. I think I should have thrown in some compost while sowing and should have just stuck to growing in pots. Well, lessons learned for the next time.

I sowed tulips in December in pots in the South East and some have started to come through. Most haven't yet though (I peeked under the soil a bit).

OooErrThor · 23/02/2021 19:28

I'm in North Yorkshire and my snowdrops have just come up in the past week or so.

The daffodils are slightly poking through and I can't remember where I planted the tulips so I'm guessing they're yet to make an appearance HmmGrin

I have noticed that things seem to be a little later this year, not sure if that's because we had so much snow and frost.

Pinksworthy90 · 25/02/2021 11:03

Oh look, I finally have some shoots coming up. Just in 2-3 days of me posting this. 😄

@justanothermagicnamechange I was planning to dig up a bit over the weekend too to see what's going on, but I'm now assured they will come up.

@OooErrThor We had just 2-3 days of snow here as I live in the Midlands, but it's probably more down to me sowing them late and the soil being very clay-ey.

I have heavy clay soil and many successful tulips each year so I don't think that's a problem. Those tips look excellent, once they start to poke they will go on at a good pace Smile
