Grass seeds for front garden

Hello!!

We live in a new build so as you can imagine, the garden is of absolute poor quality. We have dug up the front garden and want to put grass down again. We considered stones instead but that's looking to be quite expensive so grass seeds are the cheapest option.
We know nothing about gardening and was hoping for some help advise...
What's the best way to prepare the soil for the grass seeds?
Are there any recommendations on grass seeds?

Thank you 😊

I bought mine in bulk from Amazon

Ensure the Earth is totallyflat and free of stones, then sprinkle over the seed, rake in and water. Alternatively lay turf.

You'll need a minimum 9" of decent soil to sow the lawn in (no large stones), so if the soil is very poor it can be worth buying a bulk load of topsoil to put down. I used this mix www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1kg-Fast-Growing-Lawn-Grass-Seed-RAPID-QUICK-GROWTH-NEW-LAWNS-PATCH-REPAIR-/224047445158 to establish a new lawn last year and was very impressed with it. It's a rye grass blend, so doesn't have that fine velvety finish, but it's stayed nice and green over winter, can handle been walked over and is low maintenance. If you want a fancy lawn to mow stripes into then look for ornamental grass mixes.

Wilko has shedloads of grass seed in now, and it's cheap.

If you can dig over and remove stones etc and rake vaguely level, then sow dwarf perennial ryegrass at 25-40g/m2 you should get a good looking and hard wearing lawn. Grass will grow nearly anywhere, it's only if you want a very good standard lawn that you need to spend a lot of money. Hurrells/ Rigby taylor do bags of seed.

My dh uses Wilko’s for grass seed. It comes up lovely and lush. We cordon the area off and don’t let dds on it. It grows lovely and you wouldn’t know we had patches in our grass.
