I want a Clematis that's a prolific flowerer, tough, shade loving and happy in a pot to cover a fence. Any ideas?

I tried to grow one in a pot and it wasn't happy. I could be wrong but I think they need to be in open ground. Also I think the tops like to be in sun. Is it total shade? Or partial?

I had a Nelly Moser (sp) in a tub. One of those tall metal ones next to the wall and a trellis to train itself on.

Drainage in the bottom and someone told me that a slate or similar on the top to keep the roots cool .

What varieties grow well where you live ? I tried to grow a Jackmani ( small purple flowers) but it did diddly squat .

Passionflowers grow well in our clay soil too.

Clematis generally don't do well in pots (unless it's absolutely massive) as they like deep roots.

Etoile violette. Absolutely.

Thanks. I've got one that was successful in a pot last year, it is a deep one. I've got an etoile violette already and it has done well...

The current RHS issue has a great article on potted clematis. They recommend 'Ooh La La' , 'Mirabelle', 'The Countess of Wessex' and 'Alaina' for shade. (Alaina would be my fave from this list). They all grow to around 3-4 ft.

If your after another Viticella you could try 'Venossa Violacea' as it might stand out in the shade, or 'Madame Julia Correvon' is reddish and has more relaxed petals similar to the 'Etoile Violette'. 'Abundence' apparently lives up to its name too.

Oooh I like the countess of Wessex! Might need more than one variety....

I’ve got a viticella polish spirit and it’s stunning. It grows a mile a minute too
