Can you tell I'm trying to sort out the garden?

How do I prune this? It's looking a bit scraggly. Many thanks mumsnet!

I always cut the spent flower stalks off. They always look grim at this time of year. Why do you want to prune it? They’re jungle plants and grow towards the light. I only prune mine when it’s leggy, by chopping the branch down to near the base. The rejuvenate quickly.
Yours looks like the variety with speckled leaves.

I take a third of the leaves off of mine. They grow back very quickly and are super easy to maintain

That's more likely to be a variegated fatsia japonica rather than a castor oil plant. Castor oil plants are highly toxic and I don't think they're hardy in the UK either.

For comparison.
