Can I collect garden seed in winter?

Having left last year's seed heads on for winter interest I'm now wondering if I can collect these seeds for germination this year.

Birds don't seem to have left quite a few!

Or will they be mouldy and unviable? Would it work if I spread them on newspaper in the greenhouse?

(I've been asked for a 'seed-swap' and don't want to send unviable seeds in return for excellent ones!)

I don't know the answer but my advice would be to try it and see!

Go down to Wilko's, buy some seed for £1, decant into a brown paper bag and job's a good'un.
I won't tell.Wink

Oh sorry - I missed the seed swap but. Ignore my unhelpful advice and do what pp says. I won't tell either. They sell the tiny brown envelopes in the wilko stationary section as well Grin
