Any Experience With Peony's?

My mum bought some suprise plants ❤️, in the package was a freebie bare root Peony.
I would like to keep it alive to give and it to my mum, but what should I do with it?

Mine are outside in the garden, they come up every spring. Maybe wait until it’s a bit warmer, then plant it indoors in a pot and transplant it when it warms up in a few months

I have some large pots, compost and a greenhouse, but it's not for my garden - colour doesn't fit in my colour scheme but will my mum's (plus who doesn't love to give flowers, or plants that flower, to their mum).

It's bare root, so you need to get it planted without delay. Since it's going to your mum's eventually, plant it in a large pot or tub. I would put it in the greenhouse - it'll be used to the cold from the nursery and the journey to you, and I presume you've only just got it.

If the roots look very dried out, you could soak them for half an hour before potting.

I just bought some bare root peonies. I've just potted them up in a pot with compost (not too deep) and will transplant when weather gets warmer.

They need to have really good drainage so that the root doesn't rot. Make sure to add lots of grit/vermiculite at the bottom of the pot. Mine are just putting up new shoots from last year.

Peonies dont like being moved, but are beautiful plants so lovely to get a freebie! Claire Austin, daughter of David Austin I believe has a lot of advice re: peonies, she specialises in them in her nursery.
