Wicker baskets outdoors?

I'm itching to sort out some containers for our back garden and keep seeing gorgeous ideas planted up in wicker baskets. If you've tried this is it realistic or do they just rot after a few months? I haven't got time or space to move things in and out of the wet. I understand about the need to line them.

Mine rotted!
Looked good for our Open Gardens, though.
I suspect they are the outdoor equivalent of a stunt pineapple.

Just as I suspected. They do plastic rattan ones, plastic like the woven garden furniture but SO expensive.

I've used wicker waste paper baskets sometimes, and have painted them with fence stain first and left to dry. Then I've lined them inside with black plastic (a few holes in the bottom for drainage) and they've lasted about 3 years.

That's a great idea, thank you. I wondered about varnish too.
