Santa brought me growlights this year and as a keen allotmenteer I am excited at the prospect of salads & mini kale from the warmth of my spare room! Anyone got any tips to share ? I have filled a few seed trays with kale, mixed salad and corn salad seeds and after 4 days they seem to be germinating but what next? Will they go leggy ? Thankyou !

Hi,
Santa brought mine a couple of years ago. Have had great success with germination but yes, seedlings do go VERY "leggy" if you leave them too long.

This year I'm going to try planting much later so that they can go into the greenhouse ( with extra protection) asap after full germination.
I've also found that increased spacing is important so that the seedlings are not competing for the top light.

Good luck

Thankyou Ancient Oak for your tips. I had in mind growing baby leaf salads but the seedlings are looking thin and leggy now, maybe thinning them out a little will help, I have set the lights up on Ikea shelving unit but maybe there’s too much distance . I’ll have a go leaving it a few months as you suggest , so they can go into the greenhouse or poly tunnel.

I tried for the first time last year. I think they help, but January is still way too early despite being itching to start growing again.
