Preventing my spring bulbs being eaten!

Something has started nibbling on and digging out my spring bulbs. Most were newly planted in the past month. I assume it a squirrel, but would a cat or bird do this? What can I do to deter them?

Re-plant them under a large piece of wire netting just below the surface.

I use upturned wire hanging baskets over the top.

Someone suggested that squirrels dont like moth balls! Anyone tried them and did they work?

Squirrels and mice eat them. I sprinkle chilli powder on the surface after planting. You can also dust the bulbs themselves in it. It doesn’t harm the bulbs, but mice and squirrels hate it.
