My app has no idea. I’d like to plant another of these if I knew what it was. It had white flowers in summer. Sorry about the poo bag in the pic Blush

It looks like a variety of Laurel, not I don't think Laurus nobilis (bay) because of the small leaves so it could be difficult to get exactly the same variety but perhaps someone will be along with the species. You can take cuttings from them easily though.

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/12/2020 12:55

The leaves look like Berberis, but the white flowers preclude that. Uou could try taking cuttings.

DandelionsAreMyFriends · 15/12/2020 14:08

I thought berberis in the first picture but the tree is too big and the black berries are more like Laurel I think. Are the leaves aromatic like a bay leaf OP?

TheVanguardSix · 15/12/2020 14:15

Blackthorn? Myrtle?

TheVanguardSix · 15/12/2020 14:17

Actually yes, I think it is myrtle.

No and they’re thicker than a bay. And they are really quite small (like some berberis). Trust me to have something odd!

Hm. I’m looking at Myrtle. Might be, some have the right flowers. Let me look some more. Thanks!

I thought berberis in the first picture but the tree is too big. No, I have a Berberis which is easily that tall. But the white flowers preclude Berberis.

the black berries are more like Laurel I think Laurel berries are larger, more oval, they hang in clusters (because the flowers are in clusters), and they don't have the remains of the flower at the end

Japanese Holly, Ilex Crenata

hardyeplant · 17/12/2020 15:53

I'd say it's Luma apiculata, a really special plant.

MereDintofPandiculation · 18/12/2020 12:49

Can you recall the flowers? Luma/Myrtus (Myrtle) - white flowers with masses of stamens completely obscuring the petals. Ilex - much smaller white flowers, almost creamy.

BiscuitDrama · 18/12/2020 18:59

That’s the problem, I don’t think the flowers fit. I’m going to have to wait for it to flower.

They were clusters of like peony shape, with maybe slightly straighter sides, and about 1” in size.

Well, not Ilex, for sure! Grin

Are those the actual flowers, or are they the flower of something else to show us what you mean?

BiscuitDrama · 19/12/2020 09:12

Those aren’t the actual flowers, they were just to show the shape, sorry!

I’ve tried to find photos of it flowering and have totally missed that corner of the garden every time I take a photo. Quite annoying!

Luma Apiculata- Myrtle

MereDintofPandiculation · 20/12/2020 11:49

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMee not with "peony like" flowers which is how the OP describes them - unless the OP has seen them only in semi-bud and not fully open
