Rhubarb

I have rhubarb that has grown from seed and appears to have done well. I've resisted the temptation to harvest it as it was its first year. The leaves have now died and are wilting yellow on the ground. I think I need to cut them all off but some of the advice mentions not to disturb the new crown emerging. I can't see anything but it could be buried a bit as it is fairly well mulched. Do I cut them back to the base? Do I need to do anything else apart from maybe mark out the spot so I don't dig or weed in that area? Thanks.

Leave the top to die back and mulch with well rotted manure on an enriched compost

Thanks Onesmallstepforaman. I've been in the garden today and noticed it has died back now and the stalks came off without cutting. It's already well mulched, so I've just marked the spot so I can remember where it is. Hopefully it will all grow back in the spring.

It'll come back. The mulch also protects against frost.

Mine is huge now so no idea why we were full of angst! Isn't gardening wonderful?

Still don’t harvest too much this year, just the odd crumble as it’s still maturing, but next year you can feed the neighbourhood

pandora206 · 07/05/2021 16:18

I know billybagpuss. I'll resist the temptation.

I moved mine last year as it had got too big so it’s pathetic this year and I’ll have to wait.
