Ok I have bought 50 gladioli bulbs, set off into the garden to plant but they have no instructions. Anybody know how deep to plant and (don't laugh) which way up to place the bulb. Thanks.

do they have a longer name on teh packet???

fortyplus · 17/10/2007 01:26

They will have a sort of circular 'beard' effect on one side - that's the bottom where the roots come out. I hope you're a relative of Dame Edna in Oz because you need to plant then in the Spring!

and what country and area do you live in?

KristinaM · 17/10/2007 01:28

great minds think alike 40+!!! i thought she might be in teh southern hemisphere because of teh time!!!

I can't look at a Gladioli without thinking of Dame Edna!

well done we are in NZ so yes it's planting time now to flower early next year. I immediately thought of Dame Edna too . I guess it just had to be done. Not sure how they will do they're for our beach house and the soil is virtually sand. We only have natives at the moment and am trying to inject some colour into the garden. FIngers crossed.

oh I am so pleased, i never get to be a smart arse on mumsnet [smirk]

sandy soil is fine, they need a sunny well drained site

but they can be tall so dont knwo how they woudl do on a windy site

plant 5 inches deep and apart

water well in summer and support with a cane if necessary

if they are not hardy in your area, , you need to lift them in the autumn, cut off stems , dry off the bulbs and keep cool and frost free for winter

if you knwo teh rest of their name i coudl tell you more

thank you so much, we left them at the beach house so I will check this weekend.

Thanks again
