Orchids (indoor)

Can anyone tell me about orchids?

There only seems to be one place where they don't turn into twigs in my flat!

Is there a variety that doesn't mind location quite so much - or is it because I buy them in the supermarket and these aren't meant to last maybe?

I love the way they look but I have a row of sad little twigs at the moment!

Do a search - there was a thread yesterday on orchids, with a lot of good info in.

Fab - thanks! Great minds think alike then.

I've got quite a few Phalaenopsis orchids bought from garden centres and supermarkets over the years - windowsills on both sides of the house, roughly facing SW and NE . Watered infrequently. So I don't think they can be to fussy.

Is your flat maybe very warm and dry?

I’m joking at the moment that I moved one beautifully blooming one from one side of the living room to the other (me and DH are both working in the same room) and he killed the poor thing by talking to it!

I was wondering if it was like herbs - the ones I would buy from the supermarket are ok but once I had to buy a pot from a very expensive organic store and it lasted months and months before a frost got it. I assumed it was a ‘better class of plant’.

I'm not sure - Thinking about it, the ones which stayed in bloom longest (about 6 months!) and then have been best at repeat flowering were a couple I got from a garden centre - DD requested flowering plants for her 18th birthday so they weren't half price bargains.
