It hasnt a bottom so the worms can get in, and theres a rather large hole that appears over night, just the size of a rat..
So...what am I doing wrong?

omg - that is exactly why I don't have one !

Oh. Well I dont mind rats, but I dont want to encourage them in my garden, near my house.
If i let things rot in a lidded bin them put them on the heap, would that help?

We had rats because of the compost bin.
I called environmental health and they will visit free of charge.I didnt want poison in the compost bin because then i wouldnt be able to use it.
He put some poison down where he saw a track ( i couldnt see one ) and under nearby shed. He visited a couple more times and they were gone . I was told not to use so much food in there so i now stick to mostly brown stuff and grass ect. Also advised that the most likley attraction was my neighbour feeding the birds ! Apparrently rat wee is great for the compost-i do now have a lovely compost although have been waiting 2 years ! Was wanting to chuck it all in at the time-glad i didnt now.

I'm always finding bloody bread in my garden from my neighbours feeding birds. Didn't realise it could attract rats.

OK, may try and shove a brick, down the back where they must be sneaking in. I would imagine they are under my shed, if anywhere....Dont wanna call enviromental health, they will kill them and thats, well I just wouldnt.
Will food less, grass more and hope they slope off elsewhere
