What can I put in this bed under wisteria?

We have a wisteria that is trained along our front fence and the bed beneath currently has nothing in it. I’m getting a gardener in soon to dig it over and wondered what might be good to plant underneath it? All I can find online is that wisteria takes all the water which really limits what will grow but as you can see the weeds have no problem are growing like crazy!

The garden is south facing and gets tonnes of sun so the border faces east?

I would go for something like geranium elke as the pink will compliment the wisteria, they also have a long flowering period and become drought tolerant with age. I’d also have a white Agapanthus (like Silver Baby) dotted throughout for a bit of height and contrast.

I like Salvia, hot lips, for under my roses and to fill out border... that or a nice variety of geranium

You don't need to worry about complementing colours unless they're flowering at the same time. I find Geraniums don't come into full flower until the Wisteria is going over.

On of my Wisterias has Hedychium under it, the others have a mixture of raspberries, alpine strawberries, Heuchera, a Rosa glauca, and anything else which cares to seed itself there.

I was trying to find you @MereDintofPandiculation but forgot your entire user name. I often see you on gardening threads with some great advice and was hoping you might pop up on here for the OP Smile I bet you have an amazing garden!

Thanks all, I got a couple of anenomes, asters, salvias and some mini cyclamen. Might pop out today to see if there’s anything else that looks good to add at the back

I’m not sure if it’s too sparse or the plants will grow enough to fill in the gaps

That’s lovely and you can always add to it anyway if you think it’s too sparse.
