Making a start on Christmas shopping and gardening is dh’s new hobby. I have no idea where to start with finding a useful book. We have a small to medium size garden with lots of rose bushes and shrubs and a couple of apple trees. He loves his lawn (obsessed with it!) and also growing veg and herbs in pots. He’s a novice though.
Any recommendations?

I like RHS books. If you search on Amazon for 'RHS vegetable', for example, you'll get a huge choice. (I might have just added their vegetable garden week by week to my basket after checking for you.)

Monty Don's a good writer. 'The Complete Gardener' is a good general book on gardening for a beginner.

Great thanks will have a look at that one.

Looking up the RHS ones now, might end up buying him a few!

If he's dead keen on his lawn (like me) maybe get him a book just on lawn.

I've got this one, which I bought second hand on Amazon. Just make sure you don't buy gardening books for the USA.

The Lawn Expert https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0903505487/ref=cmswwrcpptai_F1mxFbBNCQVQ8

Yes I think a separate book on lawns is probably a very sensible idea. I’m actually glad he’s got a hobby now - it’s gives me something to buy him!

The best book I have found in veg growing is Joy Larkcom, grow your own vegetables. It isn’t pretty though (mainly text, with a few black and white drawings), but us packed full of info

How about a subscription to Gardeners World Magazine. Lots of practical advice and ideas what to do month by month.
Also articles on gardens and equipment etc.

It's out of print, but the best book I have was recommended on here - Geoff Hamilton's Practical Gardening Course. I would still class myself as a beginner after three years, and this book has really helped me.
