Help me identify this herb/salad?

I planted various seeds about 8 weeks ago and am not sure what this plant is - think a faded label says chard but doesn’t look like chard to me Hmm

Help me identify this herb/salad?

Did you sow any spinach?

MereDintofPandiculation · 26/08/2020 21:24

Yes, looks like spinach to me. Or any beet though not chard because the stems are not wide enough.

Foggyday124 · 26/08/2020 21:50

Spinach!

MyCatsSlave · 26/08/2020 21:52

Another vote for spinach

LouiseNW · 26/08/2020 21:55

Agree, spinach.

sorry, was away from the thread!
Spinach? I cannot recall having any spinach seeds. In fact, I checked my seed bag earlier and cannot see spinach but will check again. I'll also taste a leaf Grin
Beet? I think I had some mixed beet seeds. If beet does that mean that eventually I'll have to root around to see what's underneath?

Lambs lettuce?

DeborahAnnabelToo · 27/08/2020 20:28

I'm not sure but that's a crackingly huge beetle on there, why don't you ask him!

Gatekeeper · 27/08/2020 20:33

oooh- you've got a weevil...tell it to bugger off squash it afore it lays eggs in the soil

Gatekeeper · 27/08/2020 20:34

looks like my everlasting beet

maggiethecat · 27/08/2020 21:44

Can't see that I have any spinach seeds and compared to shop bought spinach these leaves look too smooth!
BeardedDragon - I searched lamb's lettuce which threw up a picture of corn salad (what is that? Confused) that looks similar to what I have. Reckon that's what it is - lambs lettuce/corn salad!
Have my axe ready for that bloody weevil!

Yes, they're the same and very delicious!

maggiethecat · 27/08/2020 22:01

I know! I had a leaf and it was yummy. Pests clearly think the same so need to figure out how to protect the plant. Hope no eggs laid yet as Gatekeeper warned.

If beet does that mean that eventually I'll have to root around to see what's underneath? No, if they do form beets, the shoulders of the beets will show above ground. If nothing seems to be happening, just use the leaves as spinach and the young leaves in salad.

I don't think it's corn salad/lamb's lettuce. Leaves are too thick and too dark a green. Corn salad has it's leaves very distinctly in opposite pairs, and I don't think you've got that.

maggiethecat · 28/08/2020 12:38

The intrigue!! It's killing me not knowing what I have.
Ok, am planning to eat the leaves no matter what Grin and will wait to see if any beets show up.
Had a root around soil this morning and saw something move which I promptly squashed!

Gatekeeper · 31/08/2020 16:32

Arghh, not everlasting beet but everlasting spinach. Mine looked exactly like that

MereDintofPandiculation · 31/08/2020 17:50

and saw something move which I promptly squashed! Shouldn't do that until you've identified it - it might be a goodie! In general, things that eat your plants stay still, because they're too busy eating. Things that move around are usually things that are eating the things staying still.
