Good plant, terrible name!

I have just ordered a Prince Charles clematis.🙈 www.gardenia.net/plant/clematis-prince-charles

I wanted a pretty, purple, disease-resistant variety for a shady wall, and this ticks all the boxes, but what a name.Grin I am going to have to call it by its Latin name instead!

There are some very lovely DA roses that I can't bring myself to consider because of their royal names.

Conversely, I have chosen plants sinply because they had my daughter's, mother's and childhood dog's names respectively. :D

Is the name important to you?

What about you?

Not sure why I wrote that final question twice. I think I am just in shock that Prince Charles will soon be lurking in the bottom lefthand corner of my garden.

Could be worse, could be Prince Andrew

DDemelza · 17/08/2020 16:40

Very true! I just checked the RHS website and there is no Prince Andrew. Apparently, there is a rosa Jimmy Savile, though!

DDemelza Can't imagine anyone ordering that one any time soon 😳

MereDintofPandiculation · 18/08/2020 09:42

Oh my goodness! I would have that they'd have renamed that one!

The Gardeners' World site has an appropriate comment:

"'Prince Charles' can be toxic." Grin

It also says:
" 'Prince Charles' has no particular known value to wildlife in the UK."

I was hoping to find a breeders' registered acronym (like all the Austin roses are clled something like AUSPAT) but it looks like this was bred too early for that. Or maybe it's because it was bred in New Zealand?

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 18/08/2020 17:25

😂

Isn't there a David Austin 'William & Catherine'? I'm sure I've seen it somewhere. No Harry & Meghan Wink

I adore the DA names... Anne, Alexandra, Mary, Olivia, Claire etc.
I think if i were to have my children all over again, I'd name them after my roses Wink

Congratulations on your new clematis, Prince Charles Grin
And don't forget to post a picture Wink

DDemelza · 18/08/2020 19:37

@MereDintofPandiculation , nooooo, is it a New Zealand creation? As a Kiwi, I am slightly mortified. However, I might soften to Charles a bit if even the wildlife don't rate him much! "Toxic." Grin

Haha, @AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet it is my fifth clematis purchased this year... when they get going, there will be no end to the pictures. And next year ... hydrangeas. Wink

@catwithflowers I don't see that rose on sale anywhere, thank goodness!
