What's happened to my clematis

My clematis started off well but gradually the leaves have started to go black and the whole thing looks a little sad. It's also been munched on by the nightly snail army. Can anyone advise what I should do?

It looks like clematis wilt it’s a fungus infection. Usually caused by stress, too wet over winder and then the hot spring will of done it probably. Cut back any infected growth right back. It should recover fine. Keep the roots moist they’re a thirsty and hungry plant so feed it too

Oh and burn or bag and bin the bits you cut off and disinfect your pruning tools.

There was an episode of Gardeners World only 2 weeks ago showing clementis and their various issues. One of which was it dying off in certain areas- although more drying out and going brown from memory. Maybe try youtube to find the episode.

Thanks all. @Boringnamechanging should I cut it now or wait until it's finished flowering?

Cut off any effected now. It's an infection and will spread. You don't have to cut anything that isn't effected.
