What do you call window sill/window box railings?

I'm tired of rescuing my pot plants on the window sill in high winds for the umpteenth time so I want to install some railings to keep them safe. It's Georgian building with very wide sills. Lots of houses in London have them but Googling Georgian window box holder only comes up with window box brackets or the type that you hang on the wall with a coir liner, like a hanging basket. Does anyone know what they are called?

Thanks for trying MrsMcCarthysFamousScones but no! The window sills are very big and stone, I need just the railings that go around the sill without a bottom.

Ahh I see. Like this?

Yes, exactly that! Although not necessarily that ornate, most of them are just plain bars, or even a single rail. Hmm... It looks like it's the kind of thing that is only available made to order for an extortionate price. I might have to get creative with a wrought iron curtain pole Grin

Thank you!

I've always coveted some of these! Have you tried architectural salvage places?

goingoverground · 29/06/2020 14:46

I have looked but I only found a pair of Victorian window guards for £775, so the wrong period. They are beautiful but I'm not so sure that it's worth spending that much money on an architectural feature only to hide it with plants! At least I now know they are called window guards. Thanks for your help.

I'm sorry I can't do links on my phone but www.garden-requisites.co.uk do window boxes that look exactly what you want for about £200. If you contacted them for bespoke without the base in they'd possible be cheaper? Not too ornate but lovely and although not cheap certainly not as expensive as architectural salvage.

ODFOx · 29/06/2020 15:24

Google local blacksmiths: all of them round here offer a bespoke service: it doesn't need to be big or ornate and it is likely to be cheaper than you expect for something simple. And you'll be supporting local craftsman!

goingoverground · 29/06/2020 15:33

Thanks, those are nice ODFOx but not really on the right scale. The window guards are pretty hefty, more like balcony railings. I think I've been looking in the wrong places, rather than window box holders I should be looking at architectural ironmongery.

I had a new
Feet similar to this in my old sash windows when I lived in a first floor period property. They were very good at keeping my geraniums on the sill!

Thanks, everyone!

I don't think it is a balustrade though. I think this is a balustrade, and the pillars are called balusters, at least that's what I call it!

In the meantime, I have rigged up a Heath Robinson contraption from bamboo canes and cable ties to hold my poor plants in place in all this wind and rain.

What about something like this? Would it slot into the windowsill?

I know this thread is old, but I'm looking for something similar. I presume this is what the original asker meant? (see image) This pic I drew is exactly what I have in mind, but no idea where to get one or how to make one
