What on earth can we do with this area?

Please help, we are currently painting the fences but this leads from our back gate to our garden, it's an odd space and the wall and roof belong to the house over the back of us. Any ideas?

Does it get much sunlight? Could you have maybe a pergola with flowers up the side and round the top, and then make a path through the middle with stones and edging, some small trees on the sides to walk through?

Looks about 1.5m wide and shady. I’d buy some large colourful pots, plastic or paint if you prefer terracotta, to line the side with the neighbours wall in them I’d plant some tall shade loving plants. Such as bamboo and tall ferns. Fatsia Japonica likes shade, but might have a too bulky habit.
For smaller plants there are Hostas, begonias, hucheras all with a lovely variety of leaves and flowers.
In the summer bedding plants like busy Lizzies don’t mind shade and would give you colour.
Stinging little battery operated lights would look pretty.

Storage sheds / boxes?

I had a quick google of side return garden ideas, you could make that a really nice space!

Have a think about what you want to achieve, somewhere to sit, just a nice entrance to the rest of the garden.

Thank you all so much for your ideas, it's an area we can't see from the house and we don't use the back gate very often so don't want to spend too much, here's to bottom of it near the gate

Is there anything you would like to use it for other than a path? It has a lot of potential with the wider back gate area. You could grow shade tolerant vegetables and herbs in pots or make a restful shady courtyard garden with a seat, even a simple water feature or put down safety flooring and turn it into a play area/build a secret garden with a Wendy house/den if you have young DC. A pergola or planters with trellis to hide the ugly wall next door would be good, if it's not more than you want to spend. The path will look better if you have pots and planters arranged so that the path meanders between them rather than being straight and a focal point at each end like an archway with something growing over it by the garden and something big and dramatic by the gate. Or you could embrace the straight lines and go very formal with box balls or standard trees in a row.
