Am I doing the right thing with this star jasmine?

Hoping someone can help a novice gardener!

I want to train a star jasmine to go up a wall and across the adjoining fence. There was no room to plant it in the flower bed so have put it in a pot up against the wall. I've left the canes on but released some of the plant from the canes. Is this right? Will the lot be big enough?

Thank you!

I have this by my patio doors and it’s also in a pot. I give it Miracle Gro and it’s flourishing amazingly. It’s been in the pot about 7 years!

It typically grows better on a frame ime. It’s doesn’t really seem to stick to surfaces the way some plants do, it wind around things instead.

Sorry forgot to say mine is free from canes apart from one for main stem support and I’ve used wire to train it out sideways.

Thanks all, sounds like it'll be fine in the pot. Have I done the right thing in planting it in the pot at an angle? I thought that way it would be more likely to go up the wall, but it looks a bit odd.

It’ll do it’s own wild thing anyway so I wouldn’t worry about the wonkyness Smile

If you want it to cover the wall and fence you will need a much bigger pot (eventually). Keep reporting it into ever bigger pots, and also water and feed it lots, these are tough but greedy plants.

I see some trellis behind, is that what it is to cover? I'm doing the same on a fence but using wire and vine eyes

Ours has really grown in a slightly larger sized pot - feeding regularly. I’ve trained it across trellis though and that’s helped it spread quickly.

What kind of support will it have apart from the trellis to the left? Without support it will probably lean forwards - worth putting some horizontal wires up too that you can tie it to. And be careful not to overwater. Both these comments reflect bitter experience ;)
