Planting rhubarb

We have 2 rhubarb plants given to us and have just planted them in about a 3 ft space. I read that they need about 3-4 ft each plant but will they be ok in one 3ft patch? We dug in loads of compost and watered them in well.

it will be fine.
they will take a while (a year or two) to really get going.

bear in mind though, they can get huge and don't like being repositioned. they then need again a year or two to get established again.

@bluefoxmug..
Thank you for your advice. I wonder if they will just grow to less of a huge size and still be fine and maybe produce smaller stalks. If not and if we're going to have to move them in a couple of years then we may as well move them now before they get established.
Thanks again.

it can take them a bit of time to get really big, so you have a few years' grace. And they tend to get crowded in time anyway however much space you leave around them. So it's up to you really - sorry not very helpful!
