Why has the rose gone yellow and not opened?

Moved house, it has a few rose plants. Various stages of neglect as house was empty for 2-3 years. Been trying to care for them by removing aphids.

This one looked promising but has suddenly gone soggy and died. Petals fell off stem in a clump. Why and how do I prevent it happening to the rest of the flowers?

That's called "balling" due to heavy rain, so you can't really prevent it happening again.

Wow I had thought the recent heavy rain would be good for them. Poor roses. Thanks so much.

Some varieties of rose are more prone to balling than others. Yet another thing I've learnt from Monty Don is that, when the balled buds are on the plant, if you gently rub away the outer petals which are in effect gluing the bud shut, it will open.
