I don't think they are clematis - but no idea what they are. Send a pic to the people you bought them ftom as they probably got mixed up as seedlings and they will recognise them as another plant they grow hopefully!

The leaves look like Ceanothus, Californian Lilac. Definitely not Clematis.
I’d do as pp said and send them a photo.

I agree that the leaves look like ceanothus

onlinelinda · 19/06/2020 17:17

Ceanothus thrysiflorus?

FromIbizaToTheNorfolkMaud · 19/06/2020 20:41

I think ceanothus, too. In my recent experience, the online plant companies are good at providing replacements or refunds for dead/dying/wrong plants.

MereDintofPandiculation · 20/06/2020 11:00

Yes, ceanothus. Worth having, but doesn't do the job of a clematis.

Time2change2 · 20/06/2020 12:52

Thanks guys- I think you are right! Ceanothus. Oh dear, I have planted them agains a trellis 😬

You can train Ceanothus into a fan shape along a trellis. Give it a year or two and then after flowering, cut out any branches that come forward. As it grows tie it into shape.
Once established, they are tough plants.

My first thought was mint! But assuming that's wrong agree with ceanothus.

I would email them too! Innocently saying got this but don't think it's a clematis can you tell me what it is.. They might send you a clematis as a gesture of good will. After all you chose a clematis for that spot because of the amount of sun it gets, that it's a climber, flowering season and the colour of the flowers - so that plant might be totally unsuitable lovely though it is! Not sure how much sun it get but if not enough it might not flower! And they have finished flowering for the year I think too.
