Not the most exciting thread title, I know... I bought some bags of spent mushroom compost from a landscaping/gardening company who have supplied me before.
Once it was spread over the (lovingly prepared) topsoil of my newly planted border I found a significant number of stones, lumps of aggregate, bits of slate and even glass in the compost.
I understand that it is reclaimed from mushroom farms but had expected it to be much richer with a few chalky lumps.
It has been ages since I last used spent mushroom compost so I can't remember what it should look like, but I certainly don't remember picking out kilos of stones before!
Have I been sold a dud, or is this to be expected? And more importantly, will the quality of the mulch affect my newly established perennials and shrubs?
