How to keep slugs off plants

I'm not allowed to kill the slugs.

I'm trying to grow vegetables for the first time ever, but my broccoli has been eaten. I'm assuming it's slugs but I haven't seen them so it might not be. They've also gone after my tomato plants.

I've got some copper slug tape which I've put around my things in pots, but I need something for the ones that are in the ground. My partner won't let me kill them, so things like slug pellets aren't an option.

Does you partner only object to the killing because of the pellets?

If so it's scissors out and heads off Confused.
It's horrible but effective and you will get used to it. Place a bucket or a piece of board near your vegetables preferably in the shade and turn it over once a day and cut their heads off. Do have a pair of scissors just for this.

On the gross side, when we had a dog, a dog poo would be like a magnet for slugs Grin.

The heads off method is gross, but imo the most humane thing to do.

I use bran spread in a circle around the plants I want to defend, apparently they like the bran so eat that instead. I've actually had some success with it, if I remember to freshen it up every few days.

I've made a garlic water spray. Just boil a head of garlic in water, strain and put in a spray bottle. So far it seems to have saved my one remaining cucumber plant and the sunflowers that were almost eaten have got some new tips peeping out. You need to spray after it's rained as it does get washed off. I hate slugs, but can't kill them. There are other things they can eat in the garden, but seem to prefer things I'm trying to grow from seed Hmm
